The book is an ethnography of a Hawaiian men's cultural group and describes and analyzes the ways in which indigenous men remake their cultural and gender identifies.

Linda Tuhiwai Smith is curent Pro-Vice Chancellor Maori at the University of Waikato & author of "Decolonising Methodologies: Research & Indigenous Peoples." Tamati Reedy was the Chief Executive & Secretary for the N.Z. Maori Affairs Dept in the 1980's & was awarded the 1990 N.Z. medal for his services. He has recently retired as Pro Vice-Chancellor Maori at the University of Waikato. He has published widely on Maori language education.
